Cambodia Gambling Halls
There is an interesting history to the Cambodia gambling halls that lie just across the border from neighboring Thailand, where casino gambling is illegal. Eight gambling halls are established in a relatively tiny space in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This band of Cambodia casinos is in a prime area, a 3 to 4 hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the two most popular wagering centers in Asia. Cambodia gambling dens do a huge business with Thai workers and visitors from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The phenomenal income acquired from the gambling dens ranges from $7.5 million to over 12.5 million, and there are a couple of controls requirements for gambling den ownership. Ownership is presumed to be mostly Thai; however, investment sources are cryptic. The borders are formally open from 9:00 a.m. to 17:00, and even though visas are supposedly required to cross, there are methods and means around this, as is correct of many borders.
The first Cambodia gambling halls opened in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were required to close in 1998, leaving just a single casino in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a moored boat gambling hall, contains 150 slot machines and sixty gaming tables. The Naga gambling den never closes with 42 tables of mini-baccarat chemin de fer, 4 tables of twenty-one, ten of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and 1 each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The original casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in 1999 and the Golden Crown before long opened. There are 150 slots and five tables at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slot machines and 68 table games at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights 300 slot machine games and seventy tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six slots and ninety six gaming tables, including eighty seven punto banco (the most beloved game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Additionally, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five one armed bandits and sixty six of the familiar table games, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the eight gambling halls in Poipet, also a part of a hotel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slots and 97 casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in an all-inclusive resort and hotel complex that contains a number of comforts in addition to the gambling hall, which has ten thousand square feet of 130 slot machines and eighty eight table games.
